In the individual essay, students are asked to undertake analysis of two new trends in innovation. Each student will select two new trends in innovation such as Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, 3D printing, Big Data, Inclusive Innovation, Social Innovation, Virtual Reality, etc. and perform an analysis of the evolution of the innovation (technology) landscape of this area over the past 5 years. The students will have to analyse, discuss and present the two new trends in innovation and explain and reflect the impact these innovations have on individuals, societies, and organisations. The students will be required to demonstrate their ability to apply the knowledge/concepts (such as disruptive innovation, s-curves, and many more) from the lectures to critically discuss the two chosen current innovation trends by using real-life business applications and examples and analysing the main innovation technological developments in the two chosen areas.

The essay should identify:

– Two new trends in innovation and how these and its unpinning technologies/innovation have evolved over the last 5 years

– The most important inventors, firms and/or countries and how these have changed overtime.

– To what extend these new trends impact on how individuals/societies and organisations innovate and operate.

Students are encouraged to use newspaper articles, credible websites and/or blogs, academic papers, trade press to develop their essays.

The essay should be referenced using Harvard-style referencing and include any relevant tables and figures, clearly numbered, in the main body of the report and not hidden at the end or in appendices. The words and numbers in tables and figures, and the reference list do not count as part of the 2,500-word limit. Please note that your individual diary should be submitted as an appendix within the essay (for more information on individual diaries and the template to be used please see relevant section on Moodle).

When developing your essay you should consider the following points:
