Assessment

社会规划论文代写 However, 100% of the formal (summative) assessment for this module comes in the form of a reflective and fully referenced 2,500 word essay.

However, 100% of the formal (summative) assessment for this module comes in the form of a reflective and fully referenced 2,500 word essay. The deadline for the essay is 6 December 2021. Please submit an electronic copy through Canvas (there is no need to submit a printed copy). Essays will be checked for plagiarism using Turnitin. So make sure you reference and cite sources correctly.

It is recognised that some students taking the module may be new to essay writing. There will be an opportunity to receive feedback on a draft/outline of your essay before you finalise your submission. If you are interested in such feedback please send an outline of your essay to the module leader (a.i.frank@bham.ac.uk) on/before 1st November 2021 for some brief (formative/unassessed) comments.

For the essay you will choose one from four topics. Essay topics and advice are given in the Module outline.   社会规划论文代写

Whichever essay topic you choose, it is recommended to do the following:

Present a clear argument instead of just providing description and reproduction of the lecture material or key readings. The best essays will be those which show that you have thought about the topic, formed a perspective or series of perspectives and understand what you are writing. For guidance on developing an argument for your essay read the chapter from the book How to Argue, which is provided on the module Canvas site.

Offer a clear and logical structure, including an introduction. A series of sections divided by sub-headings (usually three to six sections), and a conclusion.

Show a good range of reading on the subject through appropriate referencing. It is important to show that you have read material other than the key weekly readings.

Use proper formatting of references and citations using the Harvard style and include a bibliography at the end of the essay.

Include appropriate figures, such as images or diagrams, to support and  illustrate the discussions in the text.

2.To what degree are planners utopian?   社会规划论文代写

Has this varied over the past 150 years and if, how? What benefits and drawbacks might utopian philosophies have in terms of planning and plan development?

This question is asking you to consider the degree to which planners have been utopian (i.e. seeking to create an ideal setting  for  living)  has  varied  over  the  past  150  years. Thereby considering any patterns or correlations with other historical developments. Have utopian thoughts been useful for planning and in what respect? You might want to discuss some  of  the  early  utopian  thinkers,  e.g.,  Ebenezer  Howard and Le Corbusier and consider the impact of their thoughts on  urban  developments  and  city  building.

Were their ideas embraced or did others oppose them? Moreover, consider the degree to which planners have been utopian in more recent times,  including  the  present  day.  For  example,  can  we consider communicative planning to be a utopian philosophy? The best answers will include thoughtful reflection upon what it means to be utopian and the ways this has or has not been expressed at different stages in the history of planning.

What might ‘utopian’ mean?   社会规划论文代写

Here are some of my thoughts : utopian thinking challenges and re-envisages at least one important dimension of the society of which it is a part.

So, for example, utopian thinking may envisage a society where wealth is shared equally, or where there is no private property, or where all have equal amounts of property (a society of small, but equal landowners) etc etc. In that sense, utopian thinking is radical; and we can see why it might often be regarded as unrealistic or unattainable – because probably most of the time most of us would regard far-reaching social change as very difficult to achieve and hence unlikely.

This account of utopianism sees physical changes as facilitators of , and symbols of, social change : ie a new society organises itself physically in a different way.

‘I had always thought that the purpose of More’s Utopia was not to provide a blueprint for some future but to hold up for inspection the ridiculous waste and foolishness of his times, to insist that things could and must be better’

(Harvey, 2000 : 281)

Without some optimistic thinking what do we have?   社会规划论文代写

‘After a century of catastrophic utopian experiments …the …world… had settled on … [a] system … of prohibitions and permissions, punishments and prizes, all constructed upon human faultlines and appetites, designed to provide an infinite variety of pleasures, and which made people unhappy in ways they could only once have dreamt of. As a result … the city was unhappy … and all the town planning in the world wouldn’t be able to cure it…’ (Campbell, 2014 : 76).

Common criticisms of utopianism are that

(i) it is impractical, and hence wastes time and energy; (ii) is too prescriptive, comprehensive and autocratic;

(iii) envisages a static-state society, but in reality societies are dynamic and unpredictable.

Uses for utopian thinking ?   社会规划论文代写

* Scholars like Cooper (2014) have argued that we should pay more attention to ‘everyday utopias’ – ie small-scale attempts to work-through the practical implications of thinking differently about aspects of our social life – eg Local Exchange Trading Systems (LETS)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Local_exchange_trading_system

* Commentators such as Tobias Jones ( 2007) have argued that utopias which are based on principles and values do not, in practice, need to be concerned about every detail of everyone’s life.

Strand 1: Utopian thinking

The modern practice of urban and regional planning emerged from a group of individuals who were utopian thinkers. In other words, they wanted to make the world not only a better place, but the ideal place. Utopian thinking seeks to imagine and then create the conditions for highly civilised societies to exist where everybody has the chance to meet their needs and  flourish.  However,  whilst  planning  emerged  from  this context, current commentators have argued that planning has gradually lost this impetus in the subsequent decades. The questions you can ask yourself as the course develops are: Has planning lost its utopian thinking or not? Does it matter if it has? How does it affect the role of the planner in society?
