Amis Dance
I happened to visit Taiwan on a festive season last year as a tourist to experience the beauty of its magnificent coastline and its distinctive cultural heritage. I am a traveler who likes experiencing what the world has to offer and every time I spend traveling is always a memorable day. But my trip to Taiwan was a remarkable one and unforgettable. In comparison with other places, I have visited like coastline of California or New Zealand, Taiwan is one of the best. It gave me a particular interest to study it and more so the culture of the indigenous people of Taiwan.
The beauty is complemented by the rhythms of drums beats and sweet sounds of inspirational songs. The Amis dance it is called, a dance that men, women, and children gather together hand in hand forming big circles. All of them along with onlookers’ wear great tribal costumes used for special occasions like Amis dance. It is during July sun when there is plentiful of the harvest of millets that Amis cultural dances were celebrated. It is also at this season the people of Amis tribe feel blessed to catch plenty of fish. The celebration culminates with sacrifices to the gods as well as feasting.

What attracted me the most is the celebration with a purpose.
Every member of the community respects the Amis day as the day set by the elders to promote respect, gratitude, and unity. Although the villagers are also tech survey, that day, everyone put away their gadgets and focus on festive celebrations. Children have an opportunity to interact with their elders, learn from their cultures and be happy as well. I was also fascinated by how they use traditional dances and songs to learn customs which have been transferred for centuries. It is a day when the modern and the old cultures complement each other to the delight of the locals and tourist as well.
I posed to research Amis dance owing to my particular interest in it especially how it is celebrated with purpose and value it has to the community. As such, to learn more about it I had to participate in the active role. Therefore, I choose a guide among the elders of Amis tribe who toured with me as I learn about this distinctive culture. He also played a significant role in teaching about the community affairs. I held interviews with the village elders, men, and women seeking to understand more on the dance and value it has to the community.

The Origin of Amis Dance
The Amis tribe is the largest group among the Taiwanese aborigines (“Digital Museum of Taiwan Indigenous Peoples,” 2017). The population of the Amis hit more than 160,000 in 2004. The group is also called Pangcah which means “human being” while Amis means “the North”. In Hualian region they refer themselves as Pangcah while those from Taitung area call themselves Amis. Generally, the group is referred to as Amis. Amis has sub-groups which include Nanshih, Hsiukuluan, Coastal, Peinan, and Hengchun. The Amis has also integrated other ethnic groups as well as the Sakizava making it culturally tolerant open to different cultures.
The Amis cultural festival is a celebration of the Amis groups. All of these festive celebrations are connected to specific cultural heritage and identity. The harvest ceremony is held to celebrate the harvest and take seven days and mostly kept in July, August, and September. (“Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Thailand,” 2013) The primary objective of the celebration is to thank their gods for the gift of harvest especially millet and fish. After the rituals, people come together for feasting, dancing, fireworks, and gaming. The culture is also currently used to attract and entertain the tourists.

As the primary objective of Amis dance is for respecting the ancestors and playing for a better life.
Additionally
According to “The Conversation” (2014), today the Amis festive is being used as the tourist attraction thus contributing to the local economic empowerment of the Amis group. People come from different parts of the world to experience not only the beautiful coastline but also the ecstasy that the villagers have to offer with their cultural Amis dances (Morris, 2017). Therefore, tourism has helped the Amis communities to grow socially and economically.
However, without the harvest season festive, the community of Amis will not be able to transfer essential cultures to the young generation. The celebration is mainly relied on as the few events that bring the community together through reunions. In that respect also, the people are able to re-unite with the spirits of their ancestors as well as show reverence. And honor while renewing their traditions in the midst of modernization. As such, excluding the Amis festive from the Amis groups, will make Taiwan lose its cultural heritage as well as its identity.
