Irish Immigration
Between the 1820s to 1840s, more than 90 percent of immigrants came from Ireland, England, or Germany (Silva, 2016). Irish was the largest group. But due to potato famine in 1840s, the number of Irish grew to 845,000 from 60,000 in 1820s. The Great Irish Famine came as a result of five-year potato blight (History, 2017). More than one million Irish died of hunger in 1850s.
On arrival in America, Irish immigrants especially Irish Catholics became the target of xenophobia. Anti-Catholic existed there before was more pronounced when mixed with xenophobic tendencies. The campaign against Catholics was as a result of stereotypes of Catholics’ superstitions and blindly the Vatican. Americans feared that most Catholic loyalties were with the Pope and at the time of war they might not help. It was also viewed as a threat to democracy and hence the possibility of Catholicism undermining the strength of Protestantism in United States. Nonetheless, Irish people persevered and eventually assimilated into the U.S. culture and society. Most of them lived in both rural and urban areas especially in western frontiers working as farmers.

Nativism is a populous notion of promoting the interest of natives against those of immigrants. The believed grew to the extent of restricting immigration through punitive measures and the creation of anti-immigrant policies. Nativism was based on the fear of foreigners as threat to the home country and its citizens. Thus, it led to the development of xenophobia in United States after the number had begun to rise rapidly.
