New York City has a long history of activism dating back two centuries ago. Most of the activism movements aimed at advocation for social, racial, political, and economic justices. Perhaps the most conspicuous in the history of New York is the social and racial justice activism. In 1960s racial activist William Sloane Coffin, Jr was jailed for vehemently opposing racial segregation in the south. During those years racism in New City was rampant where black people were mistreated or even killed. Coffin was arrested after challenging the bus, lunch counter, and park segregation. In the same period, there was New Civil rights movement which fought for equal right regardless of the skin color. In this period, the movement identified police brutality and murder of black people. Many other groups and individuals joined hands and had demonstrations around the city until the government heard their call for justice.
In the 19th century, New York was still in a dark era to most women except those who were rebellious.
There existed a regressive political system where women were not allowed to take part in politics (Sayej, 2018). The era also had a restrictive legal system which barred women from enjoying the same rights and privileged as men. However, some women went out of the norm like Victoria Claflin Woodhull who was the first women to run for president in 1872. She was rebellious, and a feminist and was against any form of oppression and discrimination again women.
New York like any other city and state had labor battles which dated back in the 20th century. Workers and their leaders went on the streets agitating for their rights. Titan figures like Samuel Gompers, David Dubinsky, and Emma Goldman still remembered for their role in leading thousands of laborers into a strike for better labor conditions (Greenhouse, 1996). Their struggle was for the government to stop 60 hours of work per work policy which was made worse by the treacherous working conditions.

Role of YW in Activism
The movement was dedicated to helping young women develop themselves. Besides it being a feminist movement, it helped fight against racism in New York City. The movement actively worked for women empowerment. YWCA focus on growing the talents of young girls as well as developing them to take active roles in society especially in leadership and politics. The movement also promoted peace, justice and human dignity in the City.

The strike occurred in 1909 where more than 20,000 workers especially worked complained of poor working conditions. Another company with such a history is Daily News, a newspaper company whose workers went on strike in 1962 agitating to better wage as well as an anti-union stand. The 19th-century labor events had dramatic effects to the formation and support of unions later in the 20th century which has continued to grow strongly since then to date.
