However, it has become difficult to design an effective and efficient distribution system (Beck and Rygl, 2015). An essential consideration for developing a robust logistics is to have a warehouse from where inventories will be held; orders will be fulfilled and replenished as well as handle the order returns from consumers.

Research Problem

Despite the topic of warehousing gaining much recognition in both business and academia, little has been done regarding its role in omnichannel retailing as an emerging market. Research reviews have focused on the overall Omni-channels logistics channel (Agatz et al., 2008; Hübner, Holzapfel and Kuhn, 2016; Melacini et al., 2018). Others have explored the topic of warehousing operations and design (De Koster et al., 2007; Gu et al., 2007, 2010; Davarzani and Norrman, 2015). All of these reviews have not looked at the relationship and the role of warehousing in omnichannel logistics.

Nonetheless, there discussions on management, information technology, retailing, marketing, operations management, and logistics and supply chain management (Lee et al., 2013; Gallino and Moreno,2014; Lewis et al., 2014; Verhoef et al., 2015; Hübner et al., 2015; Rodriguez and Aydin, 2015; Hubner, Kuhn and Wollenburg, 2016). Therefore, there is need to have knowledge that brings these researches and reviews together to form a context for a study that seeks to get a structured and comprehensive understanding of the operations and design of warehouses and their impact on the omnichannel logistics.

Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this research is to establish the role of warehousing in the context of operations and design to the modern logistics particularly, multi-channel online retail market. In so doing, the study will do a systematic literature review combined with interviews and surveys to find out how warehouses have benefited the online stores. The literature review will establish the gap in current knowledge and build a context on the study question.

A foundation for the research is presented using the literature in the warehouse operations and design to help understand its impact and role in logistics. The term warehouse will be used to refer to the various material handling nodes in the channels. These channels include distribution centers, online order fulfillment centers, forward fulfillment centers. The paper also uses the term network to refer to the distribution system, which constitutes of transport interlinks between channel nodes.

Warehouse Operations and Design

The warehouse can be defined as storage or holding facility that products on transit to the final consumer are temporarily held to facilitate seamless supply and ordering Bartholdi and Hackman (2016). The rationality of having a warehouse is to match the demand and supply while bringing various products together to minimize the costs and lead time (Faberet al., 2013). The figure 1 below illustrates warehouse operations and design that shows the various functionalities that help reduce the costs and create efficiency in customer service.

Multi-Channel and Omni-Channel Logistics

Agatz, Fleischmann, and Van Nunen (2008) introduced the topic of e-fulfillment to harness the capability of multiple channels in e-commerce. They acknowledge the purpose of various channels is to increase the services to consumers. However, there are channels to the establishment of these channels. The distribution system consists of trade-offs in the integration and creation of nodes in the network (Agatz, Fleischmann, & Van Nunen, 2008).

Also, the product offering is composed of intertwined sales and operations decisions as well as delivery and after-sales services. The perspective was supported by Hübner, Holzapfel, and Kuhn (2016), who established the need for stores in various omnichannel distribution systems. The network of channels included supplies, retailers and destinations stores. However, companies that look to adopt online retailing are faced with challenges in distribution system logistics (Melacini, Perotti, Rasini, & Tappia., 2018). The main difficulties include distribution network design, inventory storage and management, and order fulfillment.

On the other hand, De Koster, Le-Duc, and Roodbergen (2007) focused on creating efficiency in inventory and order management in warehouses. It is established that there must be a good “internal design, storage assignment methods, routing methods, order batching and zoning to have effective and efficient warehousing operations (Gu, Goetschalckx, & McGinnis, 2010). Operational problems limit businesses in e-commerce and increase costs and lead time in order processing and delivery (Davarzani, & Norrman, 2015). Warehouse design for operational improvements is critical in having a sound distribution system.

Methodology

The paper will use a survey research design as the most effective and efficient approach in carrying out the study. The target population will be the warehouse entrepreneurs and managers as well as business owners particularly those dealing with online retailing. The population is within reach of the researcher and the most conservative area of the research. The scope of this research will be limited to warehousing and online retailers.

For the study, a small group of the whole population in storage and retailing businesses will be used, and the results thereof expressly adopted as the finding from the entire community. The survey will be voluntary, and the respondents will not be expected to provide personal information except age and sex. For the sampling, the instruments will be made available online. The research will include questionnaires as the primary tools for data collection. The device will contain straightforward questions that the internet user was expected to answer without providing personal information. After the questionnaires were collected, the findings will be entered, analyzed, and statistically weighted. The graphical representation of the data will be drawn and will be used to assess the results.
