  • You may work individually or with a partner.
  • Final project submission is due before the last Monday class of the semester.
  • Share a short synopsis of your project in class that Monday or Wednesday.

The objective for the final project is for you to synthesize your learnings to formulate your own intellectually-informed contribution on a topic in language and culture. This is an opportunity to explore a topic of interest to you in more depth. The main requirements are that the topic needs to be relevant to language and culture (or linguistic anthropology) and you need to engage with one or more key ideas or concepts from the course. Beyond these main requirements, you have creative freedom to choose your topic and determine its shape and format.

How do you find an idea for a final project? There are a few ways you might go about this.

  • You might start with one of the weekly topics we covered during the semester that you found particularly interesting. What interests you about that topic? What questions remain unexplored for you? With that topic and those questions in mind, look for ways to explore the topic through a particular case study.
  • Or, you might start with a particular case study or real-world issue that you find particularly interesting. How do language practices figure into this example? How might you analyze that case study or issue using some of the tools and concepts from linguistic anthropology?

Regardless of your initial starting point, you should ground your project in a specific case study or real-world issue related to language and culture. Be specific and concrete in the case study or example of a real-world issue you choose. This will help you focus your project so you can provide an in-depth analysis.

The issue or case study you choose might be:

  • A discourse example(s) from publicly available media (e.g., a YouTube video, a series of TikTok videos, social media posts). Your project would then analyze the language or discourse data using ideas from the course.
  • An ethnography written by a linguistic anthropologist we haven’t examined during the semester. Your project would then focus on one aspect of the ethnography, putting it in conversation with ideas you’ve gleaned from the course.
  • Your own original research (e.g., discourse data, interviews or participant-observation of a particular community of practice). Your project would then analyze your data using ideas from the course. [Note: If you choose this option, clear your research design with me before beginning.]

Project Format & Length

You have creative freedom to decide what format to use for your project submission. Below are the most common options along with a suggested length for each option.

  • If you choose to write a paper, be sure to organize your analysis using the rubric below and consistently apply whatever formatting system you decide to use with either footnotes or in-text citations (e.g., APA, MLA, Chicago). Suggested paper length: 5-10 pages.
  • One advantage of a video format is that you can weave in video clips that you’re analyzing as part of your project, in addition to other creative options. You still need to mention sources and end the video with a list of sources (like the ending credits of a film). Suggested video length: 6-12 minutes.

Keep in mind that regardless of what format you use, the initial steps in the process will still involve writing out or outlining your main argument (thesis) and identifying your supporting points and evidence.

Just as a paper may start with an outline, a video or podcast may start with a storyboard or detailed script. Simply recording your stream-of-consciousness thoughts into a microphone does not make an effective podcast.

Longer projects are not necessarily better projects. The best projects are the ones that dive deep into a specific case study or issue, detailing concrete examples and effectively applying scholarly ideas in the analysis (defining and explaining those ideas when first introducing them). There is no strict length requirement; but you should be able to achieve a sufficiently detailed analysis (if it’s focused!) within the suggested lengths noted above.

Although papers, videos, and podcasts are the most common types of project deliverables; please talk to me if you have other ideas. Note that, although a slide deck might form the basis for an effective video, simply turning in a slide deck on its own would be insufficient; you would need to turn that slide deck into a video by recording an audio voiceover.

Working Individually or with a Partner

You may work individually or you may join forces with a partner. If you work with a partner, you should each contribute equal amounts of work to the project — even as you might take on differing and complementary tasks. You and your partner should finalize and approve the ultimate deliverable you turn in together, ensuring it is a coherent and cohesive project (not just two separate projects stapled together).

After submitting your final project (before the last Monday class of the semester), you will be assigned three projects from classmates to review. You will need to submit your anonymous peer reviews within three days (before the end of the last Wednesday of the semester).

For the peer review, you need to complete the rubric (see below) and provide some open-ended comments. This means you will need to spend time going through each project — it’s usually best to read (if a paper), watch (if a video), or listen (if a podcast) once through and then take a second pass as you fill out the rubric and compile your feedback.

Reviewing your peers not only benefits those peers, but it’s also a valuable part of your own learning experience. Your own final project will be stronger as you work on it with the rubric in mind. When done thoughtfully, the average of anonymous peer review scores typically aligns with instructor-given grades.

Presenting Your Project

After submitting your final project, each project (individual or team) will need to provide a short synopsis of the key takeaways or learnings from your work. We will do these over the last two days of class and each project will have two minutes to present. Think of these presentations as short elevator pitches. You’re on the elevator with someone who doesn’t know anything about your project or why it’s interesting; and you have two minutes before they get off the elevator to share with them your main argument and illustrate your point with a few short examples.

Final Project Grade

You will be graded on your final project submission (the paper, video, or podcast you turn in). I will generally rely on the average of the peer review scores you receive to assign the project grade, unless there are situations where I need to adjust a grade because of an outlying or inadequate peer review.  语言学论文代写

You will not receive a separate grade for either the final project peer reviews or presentation, but these are required to receive your full project grade. Your project grade will be lowered by one mark (e.g., A- to B+) for a missed presentation and for each missed peer review; missing all three peer reviews would result in a full letter grade deduction (e.g., A to B).
