Conversations are ordinary in our daily operations as we engage in different levels. People can either participate in formal or informal discussions based on their setting and the subjects being addressed (Patterson, 2002). In this discussion, I will review a conversation that I had with my manager at ABC Center, Mr. Woods, who has been involved in employee relations cases. The paper presents a report of the experiences that I have had with him starting from when I start preparing for the conversation to the outcome that I acquire from the same. The lessons learned will also be highlighted in this report because the paper will be based on the varying opinion concept that highlights the differences between what is being said and what exactly happened.

My manager, Mr. Woods, is an interesting person who likes interacting with employees of all ranks. Mr. Woods has been an exciting person who has been a part of my organization’s growth journey. He has witnessed me learn and adapt to the organization’s culture better than any other top manager in the organization. The reason for choosing Mr. Woods is that he has been on the front line fighting for the employees’ rights and finding out their progress when they interact through various platforms. Cases of the manager having relationships with the employees have been highlighted in the organization, with several employees underlining that they have been victims of the same. The manager has, however, had a varying opinion about the allegations by highlighting that he only maintains professional relationships and no personal relationships with any of the employees.

Planning the crucial conversation

Conversing with Mr. Woods called for adequate prior preparations to clarify the varying opinion between the manager and the employees. Similarly, I had to prepare well for the conversation because I wanted everything described and discussed through the exchange. As part of my preparation, I made sure that all the issues I wanted to be clarified were well stated and with a clear objective of what I was purposing to attain at the end of the chat.

Having a goal gave the conversation a direction because it was directed towards achieving the set goals (Patterson, 2002). I also adopted an inquiry mindset before the interview because I wanted to ask the manager questions to get answers that would clarify everything said about him. I also came up with strategies to avoid getting emotional during the conversation because some of the persons who had complained about the manager’s advances were my close friends.  Getting emotional would have distracted the conversation flow because the question and answer sections would be affected. I was also prepared to be comfortable with silence because the manager might decide not to answer most of the questions that I had listed. I do not expect all the questions that I will ask to be answered because some might be very personal or sensitive to the respondent. Being comfortable was also instrumental in avoiding being disappointed if the conversation did not take the expected direction.

I also prepared to be consistent with my questions by practicing the questions that I was supposed to ask the manager based on our discussion topic.

I also prepared to deal with any of the conflict or misunderstanding that was expected during the conversation. The reason for preparing for conflict resolution was influenced by the fact that some of the questions were expected to arouse the person’s emotions or feelings and a need to resolve the issue (Patterson, 2002).

The other significant preparations that I made included deciding on the place to carry the conversation and knowing how to begin the question. Preparing how to start the conversation was able because every question was paramount, and the first few minutes of the discussion were going to determine its flow. The last step was calling Mr. Woods to inform him that I would be having a conversation with him about the employee relationship. Sharing the topic will be okay because he is also required to prepare for the interview.

Experience of the actual conversation  留学生essay写作

I had mixed experiences during the actual conversation because some of the things I had planned for did not go as expected. The conversation started well with every question asked being responded to adequately until in the middle of the conversation when silence ruled most of the questions that were meant to address the main issue. The exciting part of the discussion was when Mr. Woods decided to ask his questions concerning the topic. However, most of the questions he was asking were not easy to address because he was demanding to know the names of the people who had accused him of being into relationships. Things calmed down as time went by because we had prepared for the conversation well. Addressing the conversation’s main issue was not easy because I felt like some of the questions I asked might affect my relationship with Mr. Woods. Despite silence ruling part of the conversations when the main issue was being asked, I managed to pull through and get the responses I wanted from Mr. Woods. He finally opened up and explained the relationships that he had with his employees. His explanation helped us solve the variation in the opinions provided by the employees and the manager about the same.

The conversation was also educative because I did not only engage the manager, but I was also keen to learn from him, mostly on handling questions that could make him emotional.

The conversation was also crucial because it helped me understand the importance of appreciating as the conversation goes on because it is not everything asked that should be answered. I have also learned that crucial conversations are dynamic, and changes might happen as people interact and converse. The meaning of this is that people do not need to have fixed questions that will tie the other party towards a specific direction instead of allowing them to address any issue they feel it should be addressed.

I also learned the importance of choosing words during conversations through this one conversation. At some point, the exchanges we made were more casual than official, thus affecting the conservation’s efficiency in attaining its goal. The experience that I had during the actual conversation can also be described as mixed. I had some fantastic time with Mr. Woods, from where I knew the real cause of the issues and allegations peddled towards him by the employees working in different departments of our workplace.

The conversation ended as expected. Despite the talk making the issue that was being addressed clear, it was also educative because I gained important insights on the dos and the don’ts when conversing.

Suggestions on possible ways in which the conversation would be improved

People learn new things as they interact with new people in different categories. During my crucial conversation, I noted several issues that can be addressed to make sure discussions better and engage in the future. One of the things that I should change to make crucial conversations better is embracing silence and learning to interpret it based on its context. I have learned those interpreting silence sessions during conversations and how to break them to make conversations flow well without lots of distractions from the silence sections through the chat. The other to improve the conversation is learning to talk slowly and maintain eye contact with the second party. One of the things that I have learned through this conversation is being weak and non-convincing during the conversation because I do not have the courage needed to maintain eye contact with other people.  留学生essay写作

The conversation that I made was one way, meaning that I addressed most of the issues that needed to be addressed instead of letting the other parties also do part of the questioning. As such, I will consider making my conversations participative and two ways instead of making them one-way dialogue where one party asks 90% of the question instead of every participating party attending equally. I have also been deficient in expressing my emotions because I felt like the only person who should be emotional is the one on the receiving end. As such, I plan to let all my conversations free and interact with everyone freely without considering how passionate they will turn because conversations sometimes act as therapies to issues not addressed publicly.
